3D Kingdom member Horizon has submited his simple, but cool tutorial which shows you how to create Radioactive Mushroom in 3ds max...

Radioactive Mushroom
by Horizon (www.horizons.2ya.com)

Ok, this is a fairly easy, yet length tutorial. It was written for 3D Studio MAX 5 users.

Step 1: Reset or open MAX.

Step 2: Create a GeoSphere as a Hemisphere and a radius of 40.

Now with the select and move tool highlighted, click on the GeoSphere and press CTRL + V to clone it, use the default settings. Then go to the modify panel and change the radius of GeoSphere02 to 39.

Now make sure that you select GEOSPHERE01 and go to Create --> Compound Objects --> Boolean.

Now click on Pick Operand B.

Press the letter H on the keyboard to bring up this menu which you can see on right side ("Pick Object"). This is a selection menu. Click on GeoSphere02. This is Boolean Subtraction, it will hollow out the mushroom for us.

Ignore the Cylinder that you see for now.

Now we are going to add two different modifiers to GeoSphere01. Add the Melt modifier and give it an amount of 25. This will give it a lip and look more realistic. Make sure the Melt type is set to Ice.

Now add FFD 4x4x4, this will let us modify the GeoSphere to be wavy. Click on the plus next to FFD 4x4x4 to expose a drop down menu, in this menu click on control points (If you don't click on Control Points, you can not modify it).

Drag only the lower levels and outside control points to give it a wavy effect like so.

Now add a Cylinder with a height of 50 and a Radius of 5. Then add a FFD 3x3x3 modifer to it. Click on Control Points like you did before and highlight the middle section and drag it in any direction you like, this is so it doesn't look like the mushroom is just sitting on a pole.

Now the fun part, the colors! Change it from standard to Raytrace (where the red box is here), and change the other colors to approx what you see here. Try to copy these settings as closly as possible.

Now open up the Raytracer Controls rollout and copy these settings that you see to your right.

Now scroll down to the MAPS rollout and open it up, change each of them so that you see this. I'll walk you through the first one.

Check Diffuse, then to the left of it, it says none, click on none and pick the marble map. Now to get back to where you were, you have to click the black arrow that you see below. Then you can edit the next one.

If done correctly, you will get an ugly result like this one.

Now move the cylinder under the mushroom top and apply the texture to it.

It's kind of hard to see in the Perspective view now, but i'm not sure of how to fix this, i just learned to deal with it.

Go ahead, I know your dying to render it :)

"Ewwww, why doesn't it look like yours though?"

The only difference between mine and yours now (if you did it correctly) is that mine has a light up above in the sky. See the blue ground? Yes... There is a Target Spotlight up above. When you put the light up above give it a color of pure blue (0 red, 0 green, 255 blue).
