I've taken interview with Toni Bratincevic - one of the top artists and animators from Croatia. He speaks about his techniques and aproaches to his latest two scenes The Last Orca and A Glimpse Of The Past. He also mentioned few details about his new upcoming animation short ...

PiLe: Please introduce yourself to our readers?!

Indiana WormsToni: Well, I'm just another guy from the neigborhood. ;) Born and raised in Kastela till my 20, then I moved to Varazdin where I've finished the faculty of informatics (last month). At this moment I'm looking for a job. As for my past in graphics, I've started on the Atari 1040STF, I think it was in 1995. At that time, I have been using it to create 2D graphics in programs such as Arabesque, Calamus, Outline Art, etc. At that moment I've cleared my thoughts on what I want to do in my life, and it will be something about graphics. As for the 3D grahics, I was always impressed with it, but I didn't have the right hardware and programs to try doing something in the third dimesion... until my second PC, 486DX4/100. fter I bought it, I've installed the 3DS Max 2.0 and made my first steps in 3D. I remember that I have had the monochromatic monitor, and after I'v done some render I went to my friend who had the color monitor, to see how does my image look in color mode. ;) After a period of arpox. one year I've made my first steps with POVRay, and I was totally impressed with this renderer because of raytracing, volumetrics and few other capabilities that 3DS didn't have at that time. My love with POVRay lasted for few years. I've made lots of pictures using this renderer, and from time to time I went to Internet Raytracing Competittion where I won 2 prices which I didn't receive but that didn't bothered me too much. It was pleasure to be there. In 2001 I started to use Maya, and I'm still using it, and will use it for a long time...

PiLe: From time to time, render to render, you're improving your 3D renders and they are going for total realisam and perfection. How did you gain this great knowledge and experience?

Toni: Work, work work ... that was the main key of that. You have to do many tests to achieve the realism. The best way to raise the realism is to try to reproduce something from the real world. So use the photos, search for interesting objects, try to replicate them in 3D. Later, when you get the knowledge, you can try to realise some of your ideas. The capabilities of the today 3D programs was raised to a very high level , but on the other hand, the program will not do the job for you. That is what artist do. ;) For example, the GI (global illumination) is something very usefull, but it isn't something that you turn on and render ... you need to know exactly what the effect will be when using GI and what do you want to achieve with it...

The Last OrcaPiLe: How do you aproach new projects and which thoughts you get before starting them?

Toni: Well, for The Last Orca and Glimpse of The Past I had different aproach. The Last Orca is the image for which idea was entirely borned in my head. The idea for this image was there long time ago, but I didnt have too much time to realise it. Although the image is far away from perfect, but I've made my primary goal and that was to inwoke the emotial state in viewer. As for the Glimpse, I've just decided to create one picture, but I didn't have a clue of what should I do so I went on internet and searched for pictures that may have something that I like. Finally I have found one picture of an old building which have inwoken my attention, and I dedided to go for something like that. As I worked on image I've developed an idea, and I've cleared my vision of what I want to do with the image... something old, sad, abadoned but still alive...

A Glimpse Of The PastPiLe: How much time did you spend working on these two scenes?

Toni: As for the Glimpse, I've made it in about 12 hours. It was very fast since it's a a picture with simple models and not so hard to make textures. The Last Orca took me far more than the Glimpse since it is far more complexed when it comes to modelling, texturing and lighting. The Last Orca was lightened with 4-5 light, and for the Glimpse I've used the one light with the dome and global illumination. The last orca used a lot of procedural textures which you have to make in hypergraph, and for the glimpse I've used the image textures.

PiLe: What's your favourite part in scene creation and could you give our readers few general tips when it comes to modeling, texturing and lighting a scene?

Toni: I love all part of the process. When you want to achieve the realism then the lighing and texturing are the main parts of the process on which you have to focus on. You have to create really good textures and use all the attributes you can ... don't only paint on color maps because realism comes from diffuse, specular, reflection maps also. As for the lighting, if you want speed then the global illumination is not something you want to use, but if you want realistic lighting and you are not doing animations the GI will be something very usefull. If you want to learn how to set light to simulate the GI, you can first render the scene using GI and then try to replicate the lighting with omni/point or spot lights.

PiLe: On what are you working now? Sneek preview perhaps? :)

Work in progressToni: There is something that I'm working on for last 6 months, and it is my first short. I think it will take another 8-12 months to finish it, but if I do it like I have imagined it, it will be one funny short. ;) At this stage I'm near to the end of modelling, texturing and lighting the environment. After that I will make the characters. I haven't created characters yet because I wanted to precisely develop the psyhological state of the characters, and based on that I will model them. :) Here is some WIP (work in progress) scene...

PiLe: This might be silly for you to answer, but do you consider yourself as one of the best 3D artists from Croatia? Are there some other artists who you'd like to mention?

Toni: I don't think that was the question that you want to ask me. ;) I'm good at my area, but there are others who are far better in otherBMW Z3 areas. For example Lewis is great at car modelling-rendering, Boris made some beautifull character animations, Anto made some nice pictures ... he is talented with organic modeling. You see, we are all specialised in our areas of interest. ;)

PiLe: Could you perhaps tell us what is your area of interest and why?

Toni: The problem is that I don't know exactly. :) I like to explore everything I have in my head (ideas). That's why one day I will create something borring like BMWZ3, or something funny like Indiana Wormes, or something sad like Last Orca and Glimpse Of The past. As you can see, none of these pictures can fit to the specific style ... and that's maybe a problem that I don't have style of my own . :) These days, I think about what should I do next, and since I found the inspiration in the animated movie Ghost In The Shell, I think I will go for something in that mood.

PiLe: What sort of job did you do in last few years and what's your current job?

Different DesireToni: At this moment I'm serving the army. That will last for about one month, and then I will probably look for the job in Zagreb (capital of Croatia). But since the 3D in Croatia is not at high level, I would be satisfied if I found anything concerning 3D graphics.
As for my past jobs, I worked in the local tv station for a half of year, and that was my first touch with Maya. I also worked as graphich designer on one international project, and that lasted for 7-8 months ... at that time I produced some web pages (html and flash), presentations and similar things. My last job was for the Tommyvideo , where I've done lots of animations. And at this moment, I don't have anything comercial to work on, so if you want to hire me... I'm free. :)

PiLe: Have you ever thought about starting your own animation studio?

Toni: I had a few thoughts about my own company but I thinkDraco Airlines that is something that will not happen in near future. For now I will be satisfied with any job concerning 3D graphics. And yes, I have my dreams, and the biggest of them is to work in Pixar one day. I will try as much as I can to realise that... and who knows... but if I don't succed in that, it will not be the end of the world. This dream is something that drives me to develop my skills as much as I can.

PiLe: Any thought or suggestion for improving 3D Kingdom? :)

Toni: Just stay the way you're, everything is in the right place. And yes, I saw the new design, and it will be something when you release it... ;)

PiLe: Thanks Toni! Now, here is small surprise for you... I managed to contact some of your Croatian neighbours, who you've mentioned in interview, and here's what they think about you :)

EdgeAnto - "First time I meet Toni at Internet Raytracing Competition, 1997. He was the one of the winners. Today I can recognize solidity and great knowledge of a former POV-Ray artist, amplified with power of Maya. If I'll ever be an employer, Toni will be my the first choice."

Boris - "He is a great artist ! His /images are very rich with details but at a same time, very well balanced. My favourites are "A Glimpse Of The Past" and "The Last Orca". I even met him in person once, very nice guy. He mentioned something about doing his first animated short so I'm looking forward to see his art in motion."

Tomislav - "Toni is one of the best 3D animators who is working in Tommy Video Backs. My opinion is that he's one of the top animators in Croatia too!"
