Hyper-space Entrance Tutorial
by Rollingstone

In this tutorial I will attempt to show you how to create a hyperspace entrance, jump point or what ever you want to call it. By now, I expect you to know the basics of MAX, like using the video post, environment and effects settings.

Requirements: 3DS MAX 4

OK, lets begin, start MAX and reset. Create a tube that matches the settings below

Now apply a UVW map to it, cylindrical type and apply the texture vortexho.jpeg. It’s included with the textures file (at the bottom). Now apply an edit mesh, using edge select turn all the edges to the left or the right, so that they resemble something like this.

Now apply a taper modifier and change the settings to the ones below

The tube should look like this at this point

To make that opening apply another edit mesh modifier to the tube. Using face selection bevel the following faces, in the bevel tab type the value of beveling that you want. Bevel from the blue line.

And we’re done. Now just add it to your scene or build a scene around it, try animating it so that it comes out of no-where and then disappears once the ship is out or in. Again, I encourage you to play around with every setting in the scene until you find what you want.
